Question 1: Patterns

1.1
A pattern is an arrangement of objects, shapes, numbers, or designs which are
repeated in an order or sequence.
There are many different types of patterns, namely; shape patterns, manmade
and natural patterns, geometric patterns, number patterns, patterns in
movement, actions, and sounds, and patterns in everyday objects.

Patterns using shapes involve a sequence where 2 or more geometric shapes
are repeated in an order. If for example the pattern involved a heart and a circle,
the pattern may repeat the order of the first shape always being a heart and the
second always being a circle, or likewise, the first two shapes always being
hearts and the second one a circle etc. there are many ways to order shapes.

The importance of this type of pattern is to develop the skill of numeracy, and so
that children understand that it is necessary to have order and sequence so that
things make logical sense. It also develops their perceptual strategies which tie
in with one to one correspondence.

Manmade and natural patterns are patterns which we see in the world around us.
Manmade patterns can be found in objects which have been hand crafted or built
by man, such as; a quilt on a bed, or tiles on a bathroom wall. There are many
different shapes and colours found in a quilt which have a pattern that forms the
aesthetic appeal of the quilt. A child may look at a quilt on their bed and will first
notice the shapes which are repeated in the quilt, soon they will start noticing that
some shapes are the same but are different colours, even so, they will eventually
understand that there is still an ordered pattern which is formed in the quilt.

Natural patterns can be found in nature like stripes on a zebra, or a peacock’s
feathers. Children may see and observe many different patterns in nature when
visiting the zoo. They can learn different things from different patterns, for
example, they will perceive the zebra’s stripes as a pattern which repeats the
colours black and white. From this perceptual understanding they will learn that
patterns can be ordered in other forms and not only with shapes.

Geometric and number patterns differ in that a geometric pattern is a repetition of
a geometric shape, while a number pattern is a string of numbers that follow a
rule to determine how the pattern will continue. These types of patterns are
important in laying the foundation of mathematical concepts like algebra and
functions. Once a child grasps the concept of patterning, they will be able to
evaluate a mathematical problem or sum and determine an output. Introduction
to number patterns is important so that children can start to relate other forms of
pattern to number patterns and ideally incorporate them into mathematics.
