The Research Review Inventory (R.R.I. revised)
The Research Review Inventory (R.R.I. revised) was established for the module HMPYC80 as a
research learning and review tool. As a generic research inventory it caters for a variety of research
methods and approaches. Therefore the research outcomes are simplified and each item has been
made univocal and unidimensional, to the best of the teaching team’s abilities. Valuable student
input and suggestions has been incorporated in the fine-tuning of the instrument. The Unisa R.R.I.
revised is a teaching and learning tool that provides a systematic and objective approach to research
reviewing and research development. Feedback to continue to refine the instrument is most welcome.

HOW TO USE THE RESEARCH VIEW INVENTORY (revised)
The review inventory consists of a number of items, numbered sequentially from 1 up to 58. The first
part of the research review inventory is used to evaluate and rate a RESEARCH PROPOSAL. The
second part is also completed to evaluate and rate a completed research project (ARTICLE).

RATING SCALE OF THE REVISED “RESEARCH REVIEW INVENTORY”
Each item should be reviewed and rated on a three-point rating scale from 1 to 3.
The ratings are defined as follows:
1 or a: Absent, incorrect, or completely wrong.
2 or b: Only partially correct. It is does not attain the item requirement or criterion.
3 or c: Completely correct as the item criterion is fully realised.

Each item should be reviewed and rated on this three-point scale (1 to 3, or a to b)

The review inventory is also used to compile a feedback report. A feedback report consists of the
comments that are offered by the reviewer. These comments are linked to the ratings that the
reviewer provides. Each rating is associated with general comments and each general comment is
supported by content references. Content references are references to the specific content of the
proposal that is being reviewed. Use the “R.R.I.(revised): Review Log” at the end of this tutorial
letter to document and keep a record of your ratings.

IMPORTANT NOTES

* If the item criterion is not explicitly stated then allocate a low rating.

* If the entire document is plagiarised then give a rating of 1 or a for every item.
Check for plagiarism by using an online plagiarism check program, such as TurnItIn (if
subscribed), www.quetext.com (free), or by posting phrases in a search engine (Google Scholar,
Google, Bing, Yahoo, and so on.) to ascertain the uniqueness of the work.

* If there is only limited evidence of plagiarism here and there -- use only the relevant items on
plagiarism (items 25 and 41) to indicate this. Comment on this in the peer review procedure

* For ARTICLES compete all rating items in the R.R.I. (revised). However, for RESEARCH
PROPOSALS only perform the first 47 ratings and omit the rest (from 46 to 58).
