SEVEN ROLES OF A GOOD TEACHER
A good teacher is defined by the way that he or she interacts with his or her learners and that
includes the teacher’s understanding of learner’s needs and abilities. In addition a good teacher
has a great desire to change the lives of his or her learners hence they are able to interchange
roles within the school environment to meet them half way. By doing this module BPT1501 I have
learned about different roles that are played by a teacher on a daily basis and below I will be
reflecting on seven roles of a good teacher.
Facilitator
A teacher can be a facilitator and help learners with information without giving them an answer.
This therefore means that he or she takes part by helping discover whatever that they are looking
for. For example, during arguments he or she help learners to make an effective dialog without
taking any side of the argument, especially in order to reach a consensus. Facilitators can also use
advanced ways to help in the process of teaching and learning, ways that may be electronic
devices that will support or improve the learner’s ability to work independently to achieve
greatness in their studies.
Assessor
Good teachers are also assessors and that is to say, they evaluate learners by means of formal and
also informal assessment tasks then later give out a feedback that corrects learners for
improvement purposes and keep the record in a book to make up a year mark for the learner.
Assessors understand that these assessment tasks are important in the process of teaching and
learning because they are testing how much of the curriculum learners have grasped.
Interpreter & designer of learning programmes
Learners have little understanding therefore a teacher has to be an interpreter and unpack the
given learning programme in a way that she or he knows it will be simpler to his or her learners.
Given the fact that there is diversity in the classrooms therefore learners ought to have different
capabilities and skills which means some learners may have difficulties in grasping things so the
teacher has to therefore design more material that is based on that particular topic that learners
find challenging.
Manager
Good teachers have control over their classroom. This makes them managers of their classrooms
and as managers they are compelled to set an example to their learners in and outside the
classroom so that learners may follow that trend. Being economical with time is a huge part of a
“manager”, this include arriving at school and in the classroom on time for preparation purposes
and also being organised. Being at school on time gives them enough time to prepare themselves
prior and be conversational during the lesson. In addition, this makes them more competent in
their profession as teachers.
3
, Meditator
With classrooms having diverse learners a teacher is compelled to know the personalities and
capabilities of his or her learners then meditate the lesson in way that is sensitive to the learners.
Again, she or he is compelled to be creative whenever there is a problem in the classroom and
come up with ways to make sure the lesson is a success. This means that the teacher who is
playing a role of being a meditator must be able to use alternative strategies which may be
physical gestures, audial and even visual texts to try and give clarity to the learners.
Lifelong learner
A good teacher understands that being a qualified educator does not necessarily mean that they
must or do know everything therefore when a learner brings up a question a teacher fails to
answer she or he comes clean and admit defeat then consult alternative avenues to get the right
answer and additional information. Again, a good teacher attains professional growth by doing
researches on that particular learning area and also pursues reflective study in broader
educational related matters. In addition to that, as the teacher teaches the learners she or he also
learns from them.
Citizenship
A good citizen upholds the constitution, promote the democratic values and practices in schools
also in the society. In addition, they inspire learners to participate responsibly in the digital world
and positively contribute in it. Furthermore, these teachers empower the environment for
learners and develop a good relationship with parents, colleagues, organisations and any other
key persons based on a critical understanding of the society and environmental issues. The most
critical dimension of this role is HIV/AIDS education. Even though it is the most sensitive topic to
encounter as some know it directly from a loved one, awareness still has to be done so that
people may be educated about it and this will then alleviate the increasing rate of the disease.
