En la vista lateral del cráneo se observa su pared externa, compuesta por la región lateral de la calvaria o
bóveda craneal, del esqueleto facial y la mitad de la mandíbula.
Los huesos que forman la porción lateral de la calvaria incluyen los huesos frontales, parietal, occipital,
esfenoides y temporal. Los huesos (parte visible) del esqueleto facial son el nasal, el maxilar y el cigomático.
Mientras que la mandíbula forma la porción visible del maxilar inferior.
En la región lateral de la cabeza se tienen además espacios importantes, que se identifican superficialmente
y se extienden hacia la parte profunda
Fosa temporal
La fosa temporal es una depresión en la porción escamosa del hueso temporal; es un espacio osteofibroso
que contiene:
• Al músculo temporal
• Tejido adiposo
• Arteria y vena temporal superficial y
• Al nervio auriculotemporal
Y está limitada por estructuras y agujeros de la siguiente forma:
• Límite lateral: fascia temporal
• Medial:
o porción escamosa del hueso temporal
o ala mayor del hueso esfenoides
o hueso parietal
o hueso frontal
• Posterosuperior: inserción de la fascia temporal en la línea temporal superior

• Anteroinferior:
o apófisis cigomática del hueso frontal
o apófisis frontal del hueso cigomático
o comunicación con la fosa infratemporal
Fosa infratemporal
Es una depresión por debajo de la región temporal, prolongación inferior de la fosa temporal y principal
espacio de la parte lateral profunda de la cara.
Aquí se ubican los músculos pterigoideos lateral y medial, cuerpo adiposo de la boca; arteria maxilar y sus
ramas, plexo pterigoideo (plexo venoso), origen de las principales ramas del nervio mandibular, cuerda del
tímpano del nervio facial, ganglio ótico (lugar donde sinapta el nervio glosofaríngeo) Y está limitado por:
• Lateral:
o Arco cigomático
o Rama de la mandíbula
• Medial: fosa pterigopalatina
• Posterosuperior:
o Fosa temporal
o Ala mayor del hueso esfenoides con el foramen oval
(entrada del nervio mandibular)
o Fosa retromandibular
• Anteroinferior: músculo pterigoideo medial.
