Punctuation marks help give meaning to a sentence and provides us with a clearer
meaning of what is being written.



FULL STOPS
• Indicates the end of the sentence.
o E.g. Karabo loves the English Classroom.
• Found after certain abbreviations.
o E.g. Prof. e.g. abbr.




CAPITAL LETTERS
• Sentences always start with a capital letter.
o E.g. We brought popcorn at the movies.
• Proper Nouns and Proper Adjectives need capital letters.
o E.g. We visited South Africa.
o E.g. We participated in the Mexican wave.
• The main words in titles of books, films or plays are capitalised.
o E.g. Animal Farm. Lord of the Flies.
• The first word in direct speech is written in capital letters.
o E.g. The teacher asked, “Is anyone absent in 8V today?”




COMMAS
• Used to separate words or phrases on a list.
o E.g. We bought books, pens, pencils and rulers for school.
• Indicates where a phrase or clause ends and where a new one begins.
o E.g. Mrs Visser won the tennis match, to the delight of the audience.
• Used to show extra information.
o E.g. Mrs Hurlin, the principal, was the speaker in assembly.
• Introductory words or phrases have a comma after.
o E.g. Once again, we had a COVID outbreak.

• Represents a long pause between two equally, important ideas.
o E.g. She went by train; she would rather have flown.
• Indicates opposite ideas.
o E.g. In summer she skates; in winter she swims.
• Joins two main clauses when a conjunction is used.
o E.g. She worked hard for examinations; she has nothing to fear.




COLON
• Indicates a list, idea or explanation is following.
o E.g. I need to buy the following items: pens, pencils, exercise books
and a hard case.
• Introduces a quotation.

can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl but whatever you

• A colon follows the speaker in script writing/dialogue.

• Occur at the end of a questions.

• Rhetorical questions end in question marks.

EXCLAMATION MARK
• Follow interjections.

• Indicate verbs that are shouted, exclaimed and commanded.
o E.g. The teacher shouted, “Attention Grade 8s!”
• Used after phrases or words containing emotions.
o E.g. “I’m terrified!” whispered Lakisha.
