Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
✓ Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
✓ You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
✓ This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
✓ Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
✓ You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
✓ Write 300 - 500 words.
Evaluation
The Cutting Edge Advanced Students’ Book comes highly recommended and is
considered one of the best coursebooks to be used in the EFL/ESL classroom.
This course book gives off a sense of high education that I would say is suitable
for advanced level students only (C1/C2).
As I started reading, the first thing that I noticed was the task-based approach
that this course book has. It is clearly well-structured and well-thought out. It
has pre-defined themes and objectives. Using this book, students will be well
aware of what is expected of them as they are given clear instructions. The
plenty of tasks gives students and teachers a wide variety of activities to work
through, they have clearly covered every topic as well as all four language skills.
The course book also provides both paired and bigger grouped activities which
is bound to encourage better communication in the classroom. However, for this
reason it might be difficult for a student to follow independently.
Despite the good contents of this course book, there’s a lot more to take into
consideration when it comes to choosing a course book and although at first
sight the material might seem well-presented, it’s important to use material
which is easy to read. The book covers very good topics, but it’s bound to take
an excessive amount of time just to read through it as you work through the
tasks. This is due to all the referencing that takes place, which would also cause
a distraction and a lack of focus/attention. The referencing can be seen on
