Prospero is redeemable
Miranda is kind and empathetic
Ariel has no gender (spirit)
Prospero's Power over Ariel:
Sycorax trapped Ariel in a tree
Prospero freed him and lauds him over Ariel therefor Ariel stays in his service
Theme of Colonization:
Prospero = Colonizer
Caliban = Colonized
• Caliban's power lies within his knowledge of the island (where fresh water is and where the
food is)
• Caliban says he is the king of the island and Prospero abuses that and thinks he is primitive
• Prospero sees this uncivilized behavior when Caliban attempts to rape Miranda
• Caliban does not rape but rather a natural step in evolution
• Prospero controls Caliban with magic/threats
• Miranda believes Caliban owes a debt of gratitude for trying to civilize him
• Caliban believes that he was already freed before they came and insists that he was better
off without being "civilized"
• Caliban feels bitter and resentful
