The Chairperson tabled the issue of controlling overweight positively. Mr Kani asked Mr Kay the
Head of Department of Sports and Recreation at the university to share findings of his research.
Mr Kay reported that battling with overweight was everyone’s domain as other people were
born predisposed to obesity. He however, stressed that the predisposition was not a
reason to accept the health risks of being overweight without doing anything about it. Mr
Kay said that other women had become desperate to lose weight that they gotten their
whole self image distorted.
It was reported that women had been affected with eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia
as a result of being overweight.Ms Lado said that some students were paying double fare in taxis
as a result of occupying more space.Some students were becoming withdrawn from society and
suffering mental pain.
Mr Kay suggested that full-time physician should be appointed to be part of the programme.
Lecturers and students would have to make appointment with the physician to share some of
their frustrations about being overweight and advice on diet. It is recommended that those
participants at the fitness centre bring a certificate from a doctor that it is safe for their health to
engage in a fitness programme. However, it would be preferred that in future the doctor checks
clients’ health on the premises. All members agreed.
Members agreed that the university would engage with some medical aids for any possibilities of
medical aids funding affiliates for fitness training. There will also be a specific discounted
registration fee for students. A medical certificate from the university clinic will also be
acceptable at the fitness centre. The university would conduct a survey with the lecturers and
students to obtain their perceptions about the fitness centre and insights about how best it could
be run.
The meeting was adjourned.
