Question 1

, Question 1
A) The first way in which literary studies can promote multicultural awareness is through
encouraging text which empowers people who are previously disadvantaged and that had to
undergo inequality. These texts are giving people a voice that can’t speak for themselves or
those who don’t know how to. The next way is to allow any text or work that is about diversity.
That enables learners to understand more about other what the other cultures include which
leads to mutual respect. That way children can learn about cultures in a safe environment
where the children are free to learn and where everyone is equal. For children to be able to
learn others about their own cultures they must first be educated in their own cultures and
religions. Thus, learners can learn more about their own cultures from books which include
historical facts. That enables the learners to learn from one another.

B) Reading and writing as a symbolic process refers to the fact that there is a
connection/relationship between reading and writing. (University of South-Africa 2020:49). This
means that one of the two functions connected to the other, and both is advantaged. For
example, reading something a few times is not going to help me to remember the facts, but
reading and writing the fact will help me to remember better. The fact that reading and writing
is interlinked with each other enables us to not only think and develop emotions, but to further
those thoughts other than just reading, but also putting it into words when writing it down or
sharing it with someone. The reading and writing connections develops students thinking not
only in language modules, but in any subject, because reading and writing takes place in every
other subject, not just any language subject.

C) No, critical writing is not the same as criticism. Critical writing involves seeing both sides of
an argument that can take place, or both sides of a story. It also digs deeper into a challenge or
issue and there are multiple angles from which the text is being viewed and discussed from. It is
being seen with an open mind to have open ideas, and it motivates us to think outside of the
box and not only having a tunnel vision. This is important, as it influences the way we see the
world and what our viewpoints of the world are, determining the kind of people that we are.
This can also promote our academic knowledge.
Criticism on the other hand only has a negative viewpoint and is usually one-sided and it is very
limited. Criticism also regularly implies rejection of some kind. It also does not aid in our
academic knowledge. It is important to be aware of the difference between critical writing and
criticism, because the reader can easily be influenced negatively.
