Activity 1:
Provide 6 characteristics of (or ‘rules’ for) a good title for a research article or a research
report. [6 marks]
1. The title should disclose the main topic of the proposed study - include information
such as “what, with, whom, where” in the title. (Fouché et al., 2021)
2. Some sources state to formulate the title within 15 words or less (Fouché et al., 2021)
and other sources place the word limit of the title to between 5 and 10 words (Terre
Blanche et al., 2014)
3. However, the title should not be vague cryptic and fail to convey the main focus of the
article (Terre Blanche et al., 2014)
4. Redundant words or phrases such as “a study of”, “an investigation into”, or “a
research report on” and other similar phrases should not be included (Fouché et al.,
2021) (Terre Blanche et al., 2014)
5. If possible, ensure the title is captivating or includes an interesting phrase or saying to
draw readers into the report. (Fouché et al., 2021) (Terre Blanche et al., 2014)
6. The title should include the correct nomenclature associated with the field and the
appropriate academic writing rules should be followed at all times (eg. abbreviations
should be omitted). (Fouché et al., 2021)
