Use this Answer Booklet to answer the questions in Assignment 26. Answer the questions in
the spaces provided, and do not exceed the length. Additional work will not be marked. You

Activity 1:
Name and briefly discuss 5 purposes of a literature review. To help you with this, study
Chapter 2 of your prescribed book (Terre Blanche et al., 2006) on ‘Doing an information
search’, as well as information on the literature review in this and other tutorial letters. If you
cannot find Terre Blanche’s book, use any other source on the purpose of a literature review.
[10 marks]
1. Identify knowledge gaps and develop a research problem: explicit parameters should be
added to the clearly-stated research problem to further illuminate the problem.
2. Identify a theoretical framework: to refine the research problem. The research is based on
the framework. If a relevant theory exists, hypotheses can be deduced from the
interrelationships between the variables.
3. Identify issues and variables related to the research topic: reading the literature highlights
important issues and variables to the researcher that may impact on the research question.
4. Identify conceptual and operational definitions: clear and unambiguous definitions of key
concepts should be provided to ensure communication and understanding among those in the
knowledge field.
, 2
5. Identify methodologies: reliable and proven methodologies should be explored but the
researcher should also be alert to new methodologies and/or methodologies used to study
similar issues.
Activity 2:
Name and briefly discuss 5 qualities of a well-written literature review. [10 marks]
1. It should provide a theoretical and empirical framework for the study.
2. The literature review contains only relevant information and is done in such a way that the
research question flows naturally from it.
3. The literature review should adhere to good academic writing – it should not exceed the
prescribed length, it should be well structured and systematically presented with headings and
subheadings and should adhere to the prescribed referencing guidelines.
4. The literature review is not too general or vague and provides just enough information to
understand the research problem better. To this end, gaps in previous research is also
established.
5. Clear definitions are provided and only relevant information included.
Activity 3:
We did a literature search on the topic (moral development during adolescence) and selected
a number of relevant articles for you. You now need to search for five additional, recent (no
older than six year) articles on this topic. Keep your research problem in mind, and focus on
recent (and relevant) research articles on factors influencing moral development in
adolescence. (Remember to include the details of these articles in your reference list in
Assignment 27, the research report). Provide a reference list of your 5 sources by strictly
adhering to the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines (See PSYHONM
Tutorial Letter 103 point 5.2 for guidelines). Your reference list will be evaluated for the
relevance of the articles, how recent (newly published) they are, their status (peer-reviewed
journal versus an Internet communication) as well as for the accuracy of the references
according to the APA reference system. [20 marks]
