, 1. Question 4
Fordism to Post-Fordism - the Historical Evolution Of Work
1.1 Introduction
Post World War II, states needed to reinvigorate their economies and boost the
morale of their populations. Fordism emerged as a phase in capitalism for
governments to invest in and regain control over progress and development while
awarding much power to the working class. The issues inherent in capitalism
ultimately necessitated the evolution from Fordism to post-Fordism, where states
relinquished control to the capitalist classes and diminished the power of the working
class. This essay discusses the transition from Fordism to post-Fordism in the
historical evolution of work. First, the defining features of Fordism are discussed,
along with the impacts each feature had on the working class. Second is the
conditions and impacts of the change to post-Fordism. Last is a discussion of the
defining characteristics of post-Fordism and its impacts on workers.

1.2 Defining Features of Fordism
Watson in Lesufi (2020:33) defines Fordism as labour strategies and industrial

consumption come to the fore. Fordism blended mass manufacturing processes and
job deskilling with treating employees as consumers whose workplace efficiency,
earning capacity and purchasing behaviours contribute to the company’s prosperity
(Lesufi 2020:33). This phase of capitalism changed the technical and social aspects.
Furthermore, Fordism generated new types of workers who were less skilled and
further alienated from the products of their labour products and fundamentally altered
their working conditions, lifestyles, and the prevailing societal structure.

1.1.1 Taylorism
Taylorism or scientific management features Fordism, where scientific principles are
applied to workplace and employee management. Taylorism, originating from the
engineering sector’s management strategies, provided solutions to the labour
management crisis inherent in capitalism and continues to influence current labour
management procedures with methods such as piece-rate payment systems and
