, Introduction
Food is a basic human need; human beings need to eat in order to stay alive and be
healthy. Eating food comes naturally and is a vital source of nutrition and energy to
keep us going from day to day. For many people, eating food is not given much thought
as it is a natural instinct. On the other hand, there are many people who struggle with
their relationship with food. This unhealthy relationship with food is known in psychology
and categorized in the DSM-5 as ‘feeding and eating’ disorders. Eating disorders can
develop for a variety of reasons and can affect anyone from any race, age and gender.

Overview of feeding and eating disorders
According to (Jordaan, 2019) The first case of self-starvation was documented in the
second half of the seventeenth century. A British 18-year-old girl refused to eat solid
foods and had stopped menstruating and became emaciated. From this case it is clear
that eating disorders were already known and present in the seventeenth century. There
are many recorded cases from this time period, showing that eating disorders are
nothing new.
Feeding and eating disorders are associated with the preoccupations with food, weight
and anxiety about eating certain foods or the consequences thereof. Behaviours
associated with feeding and eating disorders include restrictive eating or avoiding
certain foods all together, binge eating, purging by vomiting or overuse of laxative or
excessive, compulsive exercise.
The behaviour associated with feeding and eating disorders become driven in ways that
are similar to that of an addict. Eating disorders are characterised by persistent and
severe eating disturbances associated with distressing thoughts and emotions. Feeding
and eating disorders can become very serious conditions affecting a persons
psychological, physical and social functioning.
Feeding and eating disorders can develop at any age, but is more commonly seen in
women, developing in adolescents and early adulthood. There are various different
eating disorders and it can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity and socio-
economic background.
Feeding and eating disorders do not discriminate and are complex mental health
disorders that can have a negative impact on the quality of life of those who are
suffering from them. Feeding and eating disorders are very common in westernized
society, where media emphasizes thinness as the beauty standard for white women.
Westernized culture has spread across the world like wild fire. Many cultures across the
world have adopted western values and have strived to achieve the very same beauty
standards. However, it is important to note that western culture alone is not the root
cause of feeding and eating disorders but is only one of the many factors.
In the context of South Africa feeding and eating disorders have been seen in the white
female population since the 1970’s. The first reports of the increase in these disorders
