Piracy, according to Fisk (2011: 12-13), takes place when there is a breach in
an author’s copyright consisting of the duplication or disseminating of their
work without their consent. He notes that digital piracy is a broad term which
encompasses a wide range of actions which include duplicating work
without the permission of the author or correctly acknowledging them, as well
as illegally downloading music, movies, books, and software. According to
Mattelart (2009: 309), in recent years, alarmist assessments of the harm
audiovisual piracy poses have risen. For its part, Mattelart mentions the groups
responsible for defending company’s rights by gathering statistics regarding
the losses caused by piracy across the world. Sixty-two percent of the losses
experienced have been attributed to piracy with major Hollywood studios
having suffered an estimated $6.1 billion loss in 2005. When discussing the
detrimental impacts of piracy on Western countries, the Southern and Eastern
regions of the world are often depicted as the culprits. Below I have focused
on the potential economic, social, and cultural consequences of piracy
within the United States.

Economic
Piracy's influence on the industry can be divided into two categories:
production and distribution. Production being the process leading up to and
including the creation of the content and distribution being the process of
having that content sent out to be viewed whereby it may generate a
monetary return. Production losses range from $12.4 billion to $40 billion per
year, while distribution losses range from $900 million to $2.1 billion. Piracy is
estimated to cost the United States between $47.5 billion and $115.3 billion in
GDP and according to Pearce, piracy has resulted in between 230, 000 and
560, 000 cases of employment each year in the United States.
Social
Businesses suffering a loss of revenue as a result of audio-visual piracy could
result in high levels of unemployment as they find themselves unable to pay
the wages of workers. This loss of jobs and ultimately the loss of a sole income
in most homes is one of the negative social effects of piracy facing Western
countries.
Cultural
One of the more subtle but, dangerous nonetheless, effects of piracy is the
adoption of western culture into non-western societies and its negative
influence on the decline of non-western cultural practices. The Global South
may absorb Western culture, resulting in a loss of indigenous culture within
those regions.

Cultural globalisation, according to Cheprasov (2017), is the process through
which an individual's culture's ideas, values, and experiences are transmitted
over the world in a number of different ways. Language, art, food, business
concepts, and technological advancements are all examples of cultural
