Lecture 5:
Circulatory Shock

, Circulatory shock
• circulatory shock = an acute circulatory crisis characterized by
hypotension and inadequate blood flow

- severe and potentially fatal symptoms develop as vital tissues (heart,
brain, liver, kidneys, GIT) become starved for oxygen and nutrients

Types of shock
1. Hypovolaemic shock
2. Vasogenic or low-resistance/disruptive shock
Relatively common
3. Cardiogenic shock
4. Obstructive shock Can develop even
though blood volume
normal

, Circulatory shock
1. Hypovolaemic shock
• also known as cold shock because skin is cold – due to peripheral
vasoconstriction and moist – due to sympathetic activation of sweat
glands
• caused by low blood volume resulting in ’d CO
• types of hypovolaemic shock:

1.1 Hemorrhagic shock
- occurs as a result of external/internal blood loss caused by ruptured
blood vessels

1.2 Dehydration shock
- occurs as a result of fluid loss from e.g. GIT(diarrhea/vomiting), kidneys
(diabetes mellitus/diabetes insipidus/excessive use of diuretics) or skin
(severe burns)

1.3 Traumatic shock
- a special type of hypovolaemic shock associated with neurogenic shock
caused by severe pain which inhibits the vasomotor centre
