Personages:
Er zijn vier hoofdpersonen: Raoul, Josephine, Cecile en Agnes
Raoul: hij is de man van Josephine. Hij is degene die alles regelt en dus ook veel last op zijn
schouders draagt. Uiteindelijk krijgt hij een kind van Josephine.
Josephine: ze is de vrouw van Raoul. Ze zorgt voor haar zusters als een moeder. Ze is een
sterke vrouw en toch ook gevoelig. Ze voelt zich vaak niet goed op de plantage maar dat
probeert ze zoveel mogelijk te verbergen.
Cecile: de zus van Josephine. Ze is een heel gevoelig en vrij zwak meisje. Ze was het
gelukkigst in Frankrijk. Zodra ze daar wegging voelde ze zich niet meer gelukkig. Ze overlijdt
op de plantage nadat ze nat is geworden in een tropische bui.
Agnes: de andere zus van Josephine. Ze is een avontuurlijk opgewekt meisje. Ze verandert
veel op de plantage door het harde werken en door Das en de slaven en met name Isidore. Ze
gaat zich afsluiten na de dood van Isidore en Das. Ze komt vooral nog bij de slaven en niet zo
veel meer bij haar familie.
Dan is er ook nog Das: hij is de opzichter op de plantage. Hij mishandelt de slaven vaak tot
verkrachting toe. Hij is verliefd op Agnes en hij reageert haar afwijzing af op de slaven en hij
gaat aan de fles.
Isidore: hij is het hoofd van de slaven. Hij gaat naar een missionaris om wat van het
christendom te leren. Hij aanbidt Agnes.
Gaston: hij is het kind van Josephine en Raoul. Na de vele verhalen van hen en Agnes gaat
hij terug naar de stille plantage maar hij vindt niets terug.
Titelverklaring:
De stille plantage slaat op de plantage van de Morhangs. De plantage Bel Exil leeft voort in
de gedachten van Agnes, Josephine en Armand. Doch op de plaats zelf waar de plantage heeft
gelegen is de stilte van de natuur teruggekeerd.
Motto:
Er is geen motto. Er staat wel: "Aan jou om wie ik het eerste woord schreef en het laatste".
Het eerste en het laatste woord is herinnering.
Verklaring/uitleg van de bedoeling/achtergrond van het boek: Idealisme, het verzet tegen
onderdrukking en geloofsdwang (in het toenmalige Frankrijk)en tegen racisme en botte
gewinzucht ( in het toenmalige Suriname) vormen de hoofdthema’s in dit verhaal. Weliswaar
ontkomt de familie de Morhang aan de eerste dreiging, maar zij gaat ten onder aan de felheid
van de tweede. Ook de onbarmhartigheid van de tropische natuur speelt daarbij een rol.
