Lecture 14

Coordinated function of
the Digestive System

B Nursing II HUB228 2022
Dept. Medical Biosciences
University of the Western Cape

,ANS regulation of the digestive
system
• the GIT is innervated by all 3 branches of the autonomic
nervous system (ANS):
1. Intrinsic innervation
- the enteric nervous system is located in the intestinal wall and
is composed of two plexuses:
1.1 Myenteric plexus or Auerbach’s plexus
1.2 Meissners’s plexus or submucosal plexus
- the axons of these plexuses branch profusely so that stimulation
of one region produces a widespread response in the GIT
- these plexuses are interconnected with each other and are
under control of the extrinsic nervous system
2. Extrinsic innervation
2.1 Parasympathetic nervous system
2.2 Sympathetic nervous system

, ANS regulation of the digestive
system
Myenteric plexus
• situated between the circular
and longitudinal muscle fibers
of the muscularis externa
• stimulation of this plexus
causes
- increase in tone of gut wall
- increase in intensity, rate and
velocity of contractions of gut
wall
Meissners’s (submucosal) plexus
• situated in submucosal layer
• stimulation of this plexus
controls secretory activity and
blood flow to the gut

, ANS regulation of the digestive
system
1. Enteric nervous system
(ENS)
• = local neuronal control of the
digestive tract
• ENS functions through local or
short reflexes
– sensory enteric neurons →
detect chemical & mechanical
changes in digestive tract
– motor enteric neurons →
stimulate or inhibit contractions
of muscles & secretions from
glands in digestive tract
• ENS controls activities within
