First Activity
a) A dictionary activity, for vocabulary and dictionary skills development AFTER the class have
read or listened to your selected text.

This could be used later in the same lesson or in another lesson. You can use the vocabulary items
you have selected for pre-teaching or make a different selection. The vocabulary must be from the
text or clearly relevant to the text.
“Dictionary Ace Quiz”

25 minutes (Including 2 minutes for instructions)
Time

1. Build and expand students’ vocabulary learning and recycling skills
to develop autonomy when studying independently.
2. To encourage students to use dictionaries effectively by searching
for definitions of words in the correct forms and contexts. (To
Aims develop “Dictionary Aces”.)
3. To demonstrate to students how hard-copy and online dictionaries
are useful in learning definition AND pronunciation
4. To demonstrate that the use of more than one on-line or hard copy
dictionary may be required
• Give instructions for completion of the Dictionary quiz activity
• Students will work individually
• Allow 20 minutes for re-reading the text and quiz completion.
Teacher’s Instructions • Monitor, and assist where necessary or requested
• Elicit feedback on completion of tasks, including testing of
comprehension of the key words in context.
• Identify problem areas and drill words including pronunciation.
