INSTRUCTIONS
• Please note that, as much as you use your study material as a guide, you are also required
to show your understanding as well as additional research. This is an exam portfolio and
you have full seven days to work on this.
• While you are using examples of different literatures such as folktales, short stories and
others, you are discouraged from re-writing the story. Instead, refer/quote/summaries the
text to strengthen your argument.
• Please use the mark allocation as a guide to the length of expected answers.
1. Folktales, as a form of African folklore, were used by African traditional societies to
preserve and impart to future generations valuable moral lessons. Using the above
statement as a point of departure, discuss the relevance and role of folktales in
contemporary South Africa. Your discussion and arguments must be accompanied by
examples from your indigenous knowledge and language systems and from what you
have studied in AFL2602 module guide. Again, please do not copy and paste from the
study guide as you will be penalised for that.

by African women public figures as well as examples from African literary texts of
your choice. In other words, you are encouraged to use African female figures as
well as female figures from your language. (10)

be adopted by our women and explain how they can be applied in the new
