Introduction:
Covid has brought many new challenges across various context. In this essay I will give
an analysis of UNISA as a system as both a FOC-, and SOC thinker, and discuss the
effects Covid had on the system and its students. I will also discuss how FOC and SOC
can be integrated in a complementary way, what the ethical considerations are, how
African and Indigenous systems can be incorporated and provide the merits and
shortcomings of Ecosystemic psychology.
Question 1: As a student of Unisa, an Open Distance Learning Education
Institution, provide a first order cybernetic analysis of Unisa as a system. In your
answer, describe the context as a first order cybernetic thinker, and apply at least
five (5) first order cybernetic principles/concepts to your analysis.
From a First Order Cybernetic perspective, UNISA as a system is an observable entity.
• Recursion and mutual interaction:
People and events are seen in the context of mutual interaction and mutual
influence. Power only exists as a bilateral process, with each individual and
element participating in the creation of a particular reality. We do not exist in
isolation, but in relationships where interaction is mutual instead of a cause-and-
effect, we understand that causality is reciprocal (Becvar & Becvar, 2014)
UNISA is a recursive process, in that the system will not survive without the
students, and the students need the system to provide them with the necessary
tools to be able to get an online/open distance education. Covid has put a lot of
financial strain on UNISA students, which resulted in many students having to
postpone their studies, or drop out altogether. This have had a negative impact
on the system, as the loss of some students also means a lower income.
