COMPLETE ALL THE TASKS

Task 1: Case study

READ THE FOLLOWING CASE STUDY AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT
FOLLOW:

Wendy decides that she must leave her husband if she is to gain her own dignity.
She originally married an “emotional child” but through her therapy decided she
wanted a man she could love and give something to as well as receive something
from.

She encouraged her husband to join a group with her or at least become involved in
his own counselling. He flatly and consistently refused. The more she grew, the more
open she became, and the more demanding she was, the more he withdrew and
became more rigid.

She decided to leave her husband and four children, and, while she feels basically
good about her choice, she brings new levels of anxiety to the counselling session.
“How do I feel about leaving my children? Did I do everything I could have done for
him? Was I patient enough? Will I find someone else, or will I live alone? Am I really
capable of loving and finding one who will love me? Have I been too selfish?”

Assume that you are the counsellor dealing with Existential problems.

Explain how you would proceed in your work with Wendy by discussing how are the
capacity for self-awareness and the search for meaning as key concepts of
Existential Therapy related.

Give the theory of the two propositions and then apply those concepts to Wendy’s
case. (20)

, Task 2: Self-reflection exercise

Discuss how you can apply the Person-Centred Approach to understanding your
struggles in life with reference to-
1) Therapeutic goals:
2) The therapist’s function:
3) The relationship between therapist and client:

The important part is to discuss the theory of these three points in your prescribed
book and then apply it to a struggle/s in your life and how it could help you to see the
struggle/s from a different lens and understand it better.

(20)

Task 3: Critical evaluation of a Therapeutic Approach

Critically evaluate a therapeutic approach of your choice in your prescribed book
from the perspective of counselling culturally diverse client populations and what are
some of the contributions and the limitations of this approach?
(15)

Task 4: Create an ethical policy document for your counselling practice

Create an ethical framework for your practice that will guide you when dealing with
and counselling your clients with regard to ethical decision making and becoming an
effective multicultural counsellor
