, Grounded Theory Interviews (1-3)
1. JOHN – AGE: 73
WIDOWED
John’s words: ‘the two most important things in retirement are health and money. In that exact
order’.
- Before you retired, what was your occupation?
à What was it about your occupation that you enjoyed?
à Was there anything you really did not enjoy about your occupation?
à Were you working in a happy work environment? Or did you sometimes feel like the
environment was too stressful and a little difficult to deal with?
I was the CEO of Nampak before I retired at the age of 61. What I enjoyed the most was that I
could progress in the organization over 30 years and having had many different positions
because Nampak holds lots of companies, so I was able to experience the business. The
people I was working with also added to this, and I think the climate in the business
environment was different then to what it is now. Work was never boring because we moved
around in the company and within the group, so we would be in a job for 5/6 years and then
we would be moved around on the basis of where the company thought they needed us most.
There was never a need to look outside for a new experience. I wouldn’t change a thing
You can’t go through business and life without negative moments.
- Did you choose to retire?
à (If not, how did it make you feel when you were asked to retire? I know situations like
these can sometimes be difficult to deal with)
I was 61 and the company was looking for succession and one of the tasks that I was given as
well, was to find a successor for them. So, we jointly identified somebody that could take over
from me and basically it meant that he was only available at a point in time and so I retired at
61 where I would normally have gone to 63.
- How has retirement impacted your interactions with people?
