,QUESTION 1
Consider the following time periods:
• Renaissance-
• 20th Century
• 4th Industrial revolution
In each time period, a) write a paragraph of ten lines based on your
understanding of the differences of the time periods. b) Locate the time
period in your own context.
Renaissance
Many say that before Renaissance, society was in the “Dark Ages.” The era is
often marked as “a time of war, ignorance, famine and pandemics such as
the Black Death.” One could say that Renaissance was a time of “coming
out of the dark.” A time in which education, literature and science was
rejuvenated. Many saw it as a better life for people in general. The time
period was from the 14th century to the 17th century. It was well accepted as
it “bridged the gap” between the Middle Ages and modern-day civilization.
Science discoveries led to a new view of mathematics and astronomy. It was
because of this that we were taught that the Sun is the centre of the solar
system and not the Earth. Renaissance art is much different from the art we
see in our century. The artists used realism and naturalism to represent people
and objects in a “true-to-life” way.
20th Century
The time period stretches from 1 January 1901 to 31 December 2000. Many
events took place in this time period which made many describe this time
period as a transformation of humanity’s relationship with the natural world.
Events such as the rise in sea level, increase of ecological collapses,
competition for land which increased deforestation, water depletion, mass
extinction of species and load shedding. This time period also reshaped the
political and social structure of the world with events such as the Spanish flu
pandemic, World War I and II, the Cold War, nuclear weapons and power,
space exploration and nationalism. Visual culture became more popular
because of all the different colours and freedom of expression that were now
included in art. Computer games and internet surfing were now seen as
entertainment. During this time period fashion trends were being influenced
by theatre, films, music, and media. People are more socially involved with
one another, with limited restrictions.

, 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR)
The 4th Industrial Revolution was termed by Klaus Schwab, founder, and
Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF), in 2016. During this
time period there is a huge change in the way we live, work, and relate to
one another. The 4IR is more than just about being technology-driven, it is
also about creating opportunities to help everyone. We see self-driving cars,
drones, virtual interactions, and people working from home, instead of having
to be physically in the office. All of this as a result of billions of people being
able to be connected by mobile devices that have extraordinary processing
power, enormous storage capacity. This era has had so many breakthroughs
in the fields of artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of things,
autonomous vehicles, 3-D printing, nanotechnology, biotechnology,
materials science, energy storage, and quantum computing.
