ManyMISapplicationsareusedinboththeprivateandpublicsectors.Forexample,anMISforinventorycontrol
providesdata(suchashowmuchofeachproductisonhand),whatitemshavebeenordered,andwhatitemsare
back-ordered.AnotherMISmightforecastsalesvolumeforthenextfiscalperiod.Thistypeofsystemusesrecent
historicaldataandmathematicalorstatisticalmodelstogeneratethemostaccurateforecast,andsalesmanagers
canusethisinformationforplanningpurposes.Inthepublicsector,anMISforapolicedepartment,forexample,
couldprovideinformationsuchascrimestatistics,crimeforecasts,andallocationofpoliceunits.Managementcan
examinethesestatisticstospotincreasesanddecreasesincrimeratesortypesofcrimesandanalyzethisdatato
determinefuturedeploymentoflawenforcementpersonnel.
