Read the statement below and then answer the questions that follow:
“The Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa (2018) states that 14.2% of primary school
children are overweight, of which 30% are girls living in urban areas. In South Africa, cultural
beliefs and inadequate nutrition knowledge lull parents into inaction. For parents and children
who are not exposed to environments that support healthy food habits, the choices to follow
a balanced diet will be difficult.”

1.1 List and define the FIVE (5) different roles of the physical education teacher
in early childhood development. (10)
1.2 Critically explain the implications for teachers when creating a safe and
positive physical education teaching environment, using any THREE (3)
roles above from 1.1 above. Provide ONE (1) example for each category. (10)
1.3 Provide FIVE (5) examples of cultural practices that could possibly affect
children’s physical development in the Foundation Phase. Be mindful of the
fact that South Africa is a multi-cultural nation. (5)

Read the statement below and then answer the questions that follow:
“… According to Piaget, it is believed that thought develops first, in turn enabling
language development, Vygotsky insisted that thought and language initially
develop separately and independently (Palaiologou, 2010). Around the age of two
years, language and thought begin to influence each other mutually, as thought
takes on verbal characteristics, and language becomes an expressive outlet for
thought.”
