,Barcelona, a sustainable destination
Tourism keeps on growing in many cities around the world, including Barcelona. If you
ask someone to define Barcelona in a word, it would be tourist mecca. Since 1992
Barcelona ranks as one of the most attractive cities in the world for travellers. It is known
for its great cultural heritage, gastronomy, sport-Barca, the parcGuell, the Sagrada
Familia, its beaches, the climate and way of life. But tourism also has some negative
impacts, especially on the environment. For this reason, the city council has implemented
a series of measures to counter the negative impact of tourism and to return the city to
its residents.
Xavier Font, professor of sustainable marketing at the University of Surrey in Great
Britain, warns that “cities often begin to manage the impact of tourism only when it is
too late”, and that “unlike visitors to beach destinations and natural parks, city tourists
use the same infrastructure as the locals”. He proposes measures for sustainable tourism
that does not hinder daily life in the city and that it benefits its residents: “It is convenient
to attract tourists for out-of-city escapes, which means less burden for the urban
infrastructure. It is also important to attract customers that behave more like locals”.
Those who visit Barcelona for the first time go to the Sagrada Familia, but those who visit
it for the umpteenth time – among which the French stand out – favour the less-known
suburbs. It is also advisable to reduce seasonality by emphasising activities that can be
done in winter or in non-peak times and offering products and services produced
locally.
Tourists give a high score (8.7) to the city and highlight the architecture, culture,
entertainment and restaurants. On the negative side they complain that prices are too
high. Tourists also object to the massification of tourist zones and monuments.
Nonetheless, overnight stays in hotels rose 5.5% last year, reaching 19.5 million. There
was a significant increase in the number of airport passengers (11.2% or 44.1 million
tourists) and cruise ships arriving in the port of Barcelona (5.6% or 206 million tourists).
Some 86.7% of Barcelonans think that tourism benefits their city. According to the 2016
tourism activity report, the percentage of residents calling for a limit on the number of
tourists (48.9%) for the first time exceeded that of those who are against such a
restriction (47.5%).
The city of Barcelona welcomes an exceptionally large number of tourists every year.
