, QUESTION 1

1.1.1 Power (5)
There is a complex interplay between power and communications. Power
relationships between participants in encounters play an important but often
unrecognized role in communication, and communication itself has a significant
impact on the power dynamics between groups and individuals. Power affects how
we interpret the messages of others and determines the extent to which we feel
entitled to speak out and express our concerns and opinions to others.

1.1.2 Historical context (5)
Examining the role of history in intercultural communication helps us understand how
the past affects our ability to communicate with people from other cultures. We need
to learn and understand why we communicate the way we do. Improving
relationships with other cultures can be very helpful. Context is very important
because it tells the recipient what meaning they give to something, what
assumptions they make (or not) about what is being conveyed, and most importantly,
it gives meaning to the message.

1.2 Discuss acceptance, the second stage in majority identity development,
and explain how this stage may influence intercultural communication at the
University of Diversity. (5)
Stage 2 Acceptance
The transition to the second stage indicates a passive or active acceptance of the
dominant ideology. In both cases, the individual is unaware that they have been
socialized to accept it. When white people take the path of passive acceptance, they
are not consciously aware that they are white, but they are not consciously aware
that they are white. Alternatively, white art forms are considered “classical” and black
art as “folk art,” “folk art,” or “craft” (Martin and Nakayama 132). People in this stage
may minimize contact with minorities or adopt a “let me help you” attitude toward
minorities. If white people are following a path of positive acceptance at this stage,
they are aware of their white identity and are able to act conspicuously. Refusing to
eat food from other cultures or watching foreign movies are examples of positive
acceptance paths at this stage.
