1.1 Write a PARAGRAPH about what you think whole-class discussion is. [10]
A whole-class discussion includes students who participate actively together in forms of groups
or as a whole class discussing amongst one another which allows for each student to comment,
debate and give each individual an opportunity to have their opinion. This is a strategy for
students to learn from one another and respect their opinions of the topic given. This boosts the
self-esteem of introverts in the classroom, this is also an equal opportunity given to students
who the teacher feels fit. Those who blurt out answers cause less involvement and distract
others.
According to my school memory, I recall my teacher gathering the class in equal groups and
each group was given a question to answer and discuss. Each question asked to discuss all
related to the lesson topic. This was a productive way of getting through an entire lesson and
having a better understanding of what it was about. My teacher would monitor each discussion
and give us feedback prior to revealing our conclusion to the class.
Another form of a successful whole-class discussion is when my teacher at the time, when I was
in grade 4. The swine-flu broke out at the time. Every-one was so hyped about it, so my teacher
thought it was a perfect opportunity to discuss a relevant reality topic. The question was, “Why
is it so important to stop the spread of swine-flu?”. The outcome was interesting. Everyone had
their own reason as to why it was so important, some were so informed with the current news
around it, this made the discussion more interesting. The teacher engaged with each one of us
and concluded with a video about the topic.
One of my downfalls was returning to Business-Studies class, the place where no-one took the
teacher seriously, everyone was so disrespectful toward her. Her questions and instructions
were completely ignored, and students used every opportunity when she asked us to do any
form of group work to instead talk amongst ourselves about the upcoming weekend, after-
school plans etc. She would not engage, instead just move on to the next topic which therefore
made revision prior to exams rather strenuous.
In Natural Science back in Grade 9, We were learning about Photosynthesis. The teacher
instructed that we group ourselves while she ate a snack at her desk, and she allowed 10
minutes just for us to group ourselves. She wrote the topic for discussion on the board, “Discuss
the importance of the process to Photosynthesis.” Some students had groups of 5, some 3 and
there were odd individuals here and there on their own. Students popped out their tablet
devices and played games, socialising on social media and the teacher did not observe what was
happening or monitor any conversations. When she asked for feedback, note no time allocation
was given, no students could give relevant information and the bell rang shortly after that. A
lesson gone to waste.

Promote preparation - If students start realising that every lesson begins with a quick

Controlled Classroom Environment – If the teacher notices that some students are
distracted by other things, the teacher can deliberately question that individual about the

topic and get him/her to focus immediately. Students will be less distractive to their peers
and become more engaged.
Educators can distinguish who contributes and their speaking skills- The educator will be
able to call upon those who seldom contribute so they can learn to engage and those who

contributes, the teacher will be able to determine their speaking skills and inspires
students to speak confidently
