QUESTION 1

1.1 Translanguaging is <an approach to the use of language, bilingualism and the
education of bilinguals that considers the language practices of bilinguals not as
two autonomous languaghav systems as has traditionally been the case, but as
one linguistic repertoire with features that have been societally constructed as
belonging to two separate languages=

1.2 The purpose of this study was to explore the enablers and constraints of using
learners’ home languages as a support strategy to facilitate learning and teaching
within multilingual classrooms and thereby developing both L1 and the English
language within the framework of additive multilingualism. The study sought to
gain a comprehensive understanding of how teachers manage translanguaging in
their classrooms and how learners in multilingual classrooms learn by using L1 to
facilitate the learning process.
