Assignment 2 Semester 1 2024
Detailed Solutions, References & Explanations

Unique number: 533465

Due Date: 3 April 2024
QUESTION 1 (2 ANSWER PROVIDED)

The living conditions in Cape Town during the early 19th century were harsh and unsanitary.
The streets were narrow and mostly unpaved, the drainage was poor, and there was no
proper system of refuse removal, resulting in rubbish being thrown in the streets or into
water canals. People lived in crowded and unsanitary conditions, with poor whites, poor
blacks, poor coloured people, and slaves living in close proximity to each other. Disease
was rife, and conditions were exacerbated by the lack of awareness about the hazards of
dirt and pollution.
