Chapter 1 – The importance of MIS
Bell’s Law states that “a new computer class forms roughly each decade establishing a new industry”

Moore’s Law states that “the number of transistors per square inch on an integrated chip doubles
every 18 months” à computer power doubles every 18 months.
It allows continuing improving capabilities. Imposes on-going business costs.

Metcalfe’s Law states that the value of a network is equal to the square of the number of users
connected to it. à the more digital devices are connected together, the more value the network will
have.

- Computer hardware
- Software

, Chapter 2 Business Processes, Information systems, and information

Q2: How Can Business Process Modeling Help Organizations
A Business process is a network of activities for accomplishing a business function. If using
symbols in business process diagram, there is a business process modeling notation. This is
an international standard for creating business process diagrams.

A swim lane chart is a graphical arrangement in which all of the activities for a given role are
shown in a single vertical lane. Each swim lane has activities, which are specific tasks that
need to be accomplished. A role is a subset of activities in a business process that is
performed by an actor. Which is a person, organization, group, or information system.

Figure 1 Swim lane chart

Activities within a business process are shown in rectangles with rounded corners. In de
figure, the first activity for the buyer is select vendor product. Buyers obtain vendor and
product date form the vendor data repository. A repository is a collection of data that is
stored within the business process. Repositories can be computer databases, or they can be
in the cloud.

A solid line between, for example Select vendor and negotiate price and terms, is called a
sequence flow.
