The railway industry is responsible for transporting goods and people across vast distances,
and therefore safety mechanisms must be in place to prevent accidents and minimize their
impact. The implementation of safety mechanisms in the railway industry is crucial to
preventing accidents. These safety mechanisms include signaling systems, speed limits,
automatic train protection systems, and regular maintenance of tracks and trains (Alenius &
Myller, 2021).
Signaling systems are responsible for providing information to train drivers about the state of
the tracks ahead, including speed limits, track conditions, and any potential obstacles.
Automatic train protection systems can prevent accidents by automatically slowing down or
stopping the train in the event of a potential collision (Tang & Xie, 2015). Regular
maintenance of tracks and trains is also essential to ensuring that they are in good condition
and can operate safely. This includes checking for any wear and tear, ensuring that there are
no obstructions on the tracks, and that the tracks are level and properly aligned (Cheng et al.,
2017).
The importance of railway safety mechanisms is also reflected in legal requirements and
industry regulations. Governments and regulatory bodies around the world have established
safety regulations to ensure that railway companies implement safety mechanisms and
follow safety protocols. For example, the European Union has established a common safety
regime for railways, which includes requirements for safety inspections, accident
investigations, and safety training for employees (European Union Agency for Railways,
2021). In the United States, the Federal Railroad Administration oversees the implementation
of safety regulations for the railway industry (Federal Railroad Administration, 2021).
Railway accidents can have significant economic and social costs, including damage to
infrastructure, disruption of supply chains, and loss of productivity. In addition, accidents can
also lead to loss of life and injuries, which can have long-term social and economic impacts.
For example, a study conducted in the United States found that railway accidents resulted in
an average of 324 fatalities and 838 injuries per year between 2000 and 2012 (Chen et al.,
2018).
In addition, railway safety mechanisms also have environmental impacts. The railway industry
has a significant environmental impact, including greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution,
and land use. Therefore, it is crucial to balance the need for safety mechanisms with the need
to minimize the environmental impact of the railway sector. This can be achieved through
the use of more efficient and environmentally friendly technologies, such as electrification
and the use of renewable energy sources (European Environment Agency, 2020).
