QUESTION 16 – SCENARIO 15 MARKS
Techno-Tops is a small high-tech electronics firm that has been experiencing problems
when hiring new staff. The company had an issue with offers being accepted, but new hires
not starting with the company, as they chose another offer instead. They also had new
employees who felt lost or unmotivated after the hype of getting the job and then left within a
relatively short period of time.

Thecno-Tops decided to address the issue and conducted research in the form of focus
groups with employees who had been with the company between six months and a year.
The employees were asked about their experiences of starting the job — how did they feel
during the process? What was their experience of their first day and first week on the job?

Some employees commented that they knew very little about the company except for the
information gathered online when they were preparing for the interview and had limited
knowledge about what the actual job entailed or the salary. The few employees who actually
attended an orientation session, said it was a five hour long outdated video (as many of the
senior and top level personnel were no longer with the organisation) and offered little help.
Then they were given a few tasks to keep them busy. Some employees commented that no
one in the office actually knew that there was a new person appointed for the position and
when that person would start. Therefore, no office space or equipment was provided. Two
employees commented that they were not even introduced to any senior personnel and were
told the reason by a cleaner, that unfortunately this is a very busy time for the company. One
employee commented that he was introduced to a “buddy” on his first day but that “buddy”
was only interested in office gossip and was not told anything about what to do for the next
few days.
