,Abstract
The present study explored the impact of Covid-19 on parent-child relationships, and the
effects this has on both children and parents. A lack of research in the South African
context, coupled with inadequate coverage of the impact of the new normal on parent-child
relationships served as the impetus for the current research. The sample consisted of two
males and two females, individual parents of children between the ages 6-11 living in the
Grange area, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Given the exploratory and qualitative nature
of the present study, semi-structured interviews were used for data collection; and data
was analysed thematically. The most significant findings were that the new normal has a
positive impact on parent-child relationships but has some negative impact on both
parents and children’s mental and physical well-being. This study has contributed towards
addressing and identifying the impact of the new normal on parent-child relationships, as
well as looking at the effect on both parents and children.
