Dear Student
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a disruption on last year's academic calender, resulting in
some universities not being able to complete the academic year. Matriculants' results have also
not yet been released because of the disruption. This has also unfortunately affected our
academic offering at Unisa this year. As a result, the 2021 academic year has been shortened
in line with instructions from the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). This
would have impacted negatively on our semester offerings leaving very little teaching and
learning time. We were therefore required to make amendments to our academic plan for 2021
to accommodate the suggested change.
The University combining the two semesters into a single academic period — there are only one
examination session in 2021 for both semesters.
As part of this tutorial letter, we wish to inform you that Unisa has implemented a transformation
charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In response to this charter, we have also
placed curriculum transformation high on the agenda. For your information, curriculum
transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred scholarship, the pedagogical
renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and
the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. These pillars and their principles will be
integrated at both the programme and module levels, as a phased-in approach. You will notice
the implementation thereof in your modules, and we encourage you to fully embrace these
changes during your studies at Unisa.
1 INTRODUCTION TO THE MODULE
Welcome to the module in Basic Measurement and Questionnaire Design in Psychology. We
hope you will enjoy your studies. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you experience any
problems.
This paper is called Basic Measurement and Questionnaire Design in Psychology. The code of
this paper is PYC2606. Paper names and paper codes are part of Unisa-speak. So if you want
to ask anybody at Unisa something about this paper remember the name Basic Measurement
and Questionnaire Design in Psychology and the code PYC2606.
PYC2606 (Basic Measurement and Questionnaire Design) is one of the modules included in the
Alternative Assessment Project. We will use an alternative assessment measure for this
module. Students will sit for a timed online assessment, which means they will be required to
complete the assessment online on a particular date and time. This means that there is no
venue based written examination for this module. You will sit for an online assessment. The
online assessment means you will be required to log-on online. If you cannot do so from home
or from an internet café you have to reserve a computer at a Unisa regional office.
The Department Despatch should supply you with the following study material for this module:
•Study guide
•Tutorial Letter 101 - general information and assignments.
Bear in mind that in distance education the written word is the main means of study and
communication between lecturers and students. We will also use myUnisa to bring important
aspects to your attention and therefore announcements must all be read carefully, acted upon
where necessary, and kept for future reference.

2 PURPOSE OF AND OUTCOMES
2.1 Purpose
The purpose of this module is to develop your skills and competencies so that you will be able
to deliberate the design of questionnaires intended for implementation in multinational,
multicultural, or multiregional research. The module points out that research findings can be
affected by wording, question order, and other aspects of questionnaire design. Furthermore
you will develop the skills to master the principles and procedures related to the administration,
analyses and interpretation of results amongst others to evaluate the properties of the
questionnaire. Generally speaking, ideas about the content domain for a questionnaire come
from our observations and experiences of the world around us.
2.2 Outcomes
In studying this module, you will increase your understanding of the meaning of psychological
theory and constructs in relation to measurement. You will gain insight to apply knowledge of
measurement and questionnaire design in a manner that is fit for purpose and contextually
relevant, given different purposes and different contexts. You will learn to be aware of cross-
cultural differences in the relevance, saliency, and social desirability of survey questions. For
instance, certain questions may not be relevant or salient for a given population and that
population may not have the information necessary to answer those questions. In addition,
questions considered inoffensive in one culture may be threatening or taboo in other cultures.
The format of presentation and assessment requires active participation and applied critical
thinking.
A range of assessment tasks in tutorial letters and online assessment will assist you to achieve
the following outcomes:
Identify a suitable content domain
Design a questionnaire
Writing questionnaire items
Pilot-test the questionnaire
Evaluate reliability and validity
Compile a manual
Review a questionnaire
Review a manual
