Question 1

1.1 “A variety of factors influence the acquisition and development of langauge of the
young child” Discuss this statement with specific reference to the following factors (12).

a) Socio-economic status: Mothers from a middle socio-economic class tend to help and
support their kids more which leads to a better understanding as opposed to mothers from
a lower socio-economic class where it is more prescriptive. The former children learn earlier
than the latter group.

b) Physical factors: The maturation of the speech organs is essential. Without development
of the nerve tracts, speech would not be possible

c) Environmental factors: A child learns the language spoken by his parents, family and
people around him in his immediate environment.

d) Educative methods: Some educators are more prescriptive and explain less when
they communicate with children leaving little opportunity for creativity and initiative
from the child.

1.2 How will you as a teacher identify a late developer in your class (4)

1. Babylike look compared to fellow learners
2. Difficulty iinteracting socially with peers-prefers to play with younger learners.
3. Poor attention span and lack of concentration.
4. Eye-hand co-ordination problem
5. After age 5 problem with laterality-distiinguishing left and right.

1.3 Name and explain 3 disciplinary styles educators may use in order to apply authority in
their classroom (9) – I’m listing all five (5)

a) The authoritarian disciplinary style

1) The educator alone decides whats right and wrong, and has very firm convictions
as far as this is concerned.
2) The educator expects the child to be obedient and submissive at all times, never
to question anything and just do exactly as he is told.
3) If the child does anything wrong, the educator will nearly always reprimand,
threaten and punish the child.

b) The permissive disciplinary style

1. The child is mostly permitted to do as he pleases.
2. The child is seldom punished and is totally “free” and depends on his own
resources.
