Question 1
Refer to Unit 3 of your Tut Letter 501 and Chapter 12 of your prescribed text
How to Analyse Texts.
Examine the spelling and pronunciation of the following words. Using these
words as examples, explain the discrepancy between spelling and
pronunciation in the English Language. In your explanation make clear
reference to the manner of articulation and the place of articulation.
a) Nation and fashion
The words "nation" and "fashion" demonstrate a discrepancy between their
spelling and pronunciation. The reason behind this lies in the historical
development of the English language and the influence of borrowed words.

The word "nation" is spelled with "-tion" at the end, but the pronunciation ends
with a "shun" sound. This discrepancy can be explained by understanding the
manner of articulation and the place of articulation of the sounds involved. In
the case of "-tion," the "t" and "i" are not pronounced separately but are
combined to create a single sound, known as a affricate sound. The place of
articulation for this sound is the alveolar ridge, where the tongue touches the
upper teeth. The "sh" sound is an example of a fricative sound, which is
produced by forcing air through a narrow passage created by the tongue and
teeth. In this case, the "sh" sound is produced by raising the back of the tongue
toward the roof of the mouth. The combination of these two sounds results in
the "shun" sound in the word "nation."

Similarly, the word "fashion" has a discrepancy between its spelling and
pronunciation. The "-ion" at the end is pronounced as "shun." Again, this can be
explained by understanding the manner and place of articulation. The "-ion"
ending represents a nasal sound produced by lowering the soft palate, allowing
air to flow through the nose. The "sh" sound is produced as explained earlier.
Together, they create the "shun" sound.
