Distinction between quantitative and qualitative research methodology and
their examples
Qualitative Research is predominantly exploratory research.1 This simply
means that its usage is to gain a clear understanding of essential motives,
views, and motivations. It affords insights into the problems or aids to advance
notions or theories for probable quantitative research.2 Now the main
objectives in qualitative (action) research it is to build theory and essentially
solve problems. The type of data that can be collected while conducting
qualitative research can be words, images, or objects.3 While the form of those
types data’s I have mentioned can be open- ended responses, interviews,
participant observations, field notes, and so called reflections.4 Quantitative
research is narrow and seeks explanations.
Quantitative research encompasses the usage of methodical statistical processes
or measures to test, prove and verify premises or hypothesis.5 This simply
means it is used to quantify the problem by way of producing statistical data or
data that can be distorted into useable statistics. It is used to measure attitudes,
