INTERMEDIATE PHASE
DUE: 19 JUNE 2023

ASSIGNMENT 2
YEAR MODULE 2023

, QUESTION 1

• It is important not to regard one language as more important than another.
All children must thus feel that their HL is important, even though the HL
is not taught at school. Have respect for other languages.
• Teacher should have language tolerance as this leads to an improvement
in learners‟ learning skills, a more positive attitude and an awareness of
diversity.
• Make learners aware of the value of languages in one‟s life.

• Teachers should regard the terms HL, FAL and SAL as referring to the
specific proficiency level at which the school offers the language.
• At the Home Language level, proficiency refers to two aspects. The first
is that of basic interpersonal skills that allows learners to communicate
in social settings. The second refers to cognitive academic skills which is
needed for learning in every subject of the curriculum.
• Teachers should determine the proficiency level of each learner.
• When learners progress to the Senior Phase, they should hold a good
level of proficiency in both basic interpersonal skills and cognitive
academic skills to learn effectively. While this is the ideal scenario in
South Africa, you may find that many learners in the Senior Phase do not
hold the required level of proficiency. Therefore, Intermediate Phase
teachers have a crucial role to play in developing the proficiency levels of
learners so that they may learn all school subjects in the language of
learning and teaching.
• Teachers must be aware of learners who did not master the language
skills (especially reading) properly in Grades 1 to 3 and give extra
attention to these learners.
• In group work, HL learners should to be paired with those learners whose
home language differs from the one taught at school – this could assist
learners who are not on the required level of proficiency.
