Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” Quotes

, Chapter by chapter summary

Act I

 The play opens with a storm at sea. Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, has
been exiled to a remote island by his brother Antonio, who has usurped his
dukedom. Prospero is accompanied by his daughter Miranda, and they
have been living on the island for twelve years.
 Prospero has magical powers, and he uses them to control the spirits of the
island. He has also enslaved a native of the island, Caliban, and forced him
to work for him.
A ship carrying the King of Naples, Alonso, his brother Sebastian, and other
nobles is caught in the storm and shipwrecked on the island.

Act II

 Prospero uses his magic to create a masque for Miranda and Ferdinand, the
son of Alonso. The masque celebrates the upcoming marriage of Miranda
and Ferdinand.
 Caliban, Trinculo, and Stephano, a drunken butler, plot to kill Prospero and
take over the island.

Act III

 Prospero overhears Caliban, Trinculo, and Stephano plotting against him. He
uses his magic to create a vision of a banquet, which the three men mistake
for real. When they try to eat the food, they are attacked by spirits.
 Prospero forgives Caliban, but he still refuses to let him go free.

Act IV

 Prospero uses his magic to reunite Ferdinand and Miranda. He also uses his
magic to make the King of Naples and his companions believe that they
have been dreaming.

Act V

 Prospero gives up his magic and returns to Milan with Miranda and
Ferdinand. He forgives his brother Antonio and restores him to his rightful
place as Duke of Milan.
 The play ends with a song of celebration.
