, 1.CONTEXTUAL QUESTIONNAIRE – QUESTION ONE (5 Marks)
Answer the following open-ended questions to the best of your ability and give as much
information as possible.
1. Describe the school where you did your practical teaching (location, age, facilities,
how many learners are enrolled at the school, how many teachers teach at the
school, the language of learning and teaching, and so forth).
Winterberg Primary is located in Uitenhage. The school is one of the oldest primary schools in
the town. There are adequate facilities available at the school such as well-ventilated
classrooms, withoffices and staff room area, playground for sporting and exercising activities,
and separate restrooms for male and female learners and staff.
There are over 700 students enrolled at the school with approximately 29 teachers that teach
various subjects and grades. The primary language for teaching at the school is Afrikaans and
English teachers use these languages when teaching students and thereafter explain in
English.
The school has a welcoming environment, which is pleasing to new teachers, the staff and [
other faculty members are always ready to help whenever they can. There is a part of the
school that cannot be use due to a fire year and years ago which the school don’t have the
finance to repair.
2. Describe the classroom in which you did your practical teaching (size, facilities,
learning and teaching support materials, classroom atmosphere, and so forth).
The classroom was quite big as is most classrooms in the school. The classrooms are very old
fashioned with a green chalk board and desks that are old. There are posters on the wall and a
book a shelve with books if learners want to read. The classroom in which I did my practicals
were my favourite class as it was nicely decorated and the teacher did want to my it feels
homely for the learners and create a good atmosphere for learners which helped.
3. Describe the learners you taught during your practical teaching (number per class,
degree of readiness to learn, their home environmental conditions, and so forth).
The number of learners in a classroom is close to 40 and most of them want to learn but there
were a few learners who would try to disrupt the classroom and make sounds and even refuse
to do any work. These children at this school’s home environment conditions are not the best,
they are usually poor and these children have to walk very far to school and again back home,
some of them can’t afford a school trouser and them some of them come to class with knives,
etc because they say they want to be a gangster like their brothers. From this all I got already
picked up that these children’s home environmental additions are not the best.
,4. Describe how the COVID-19 pandemic changed the teaching and learning practices
at this school.
At least one good thing has come out of the COVID-19 pandemic: people now understandmuch
better the value of public education. Due to school closings, parents struggle to spendtime with their
kids at home; yet, public acknowledgement of the crucial caregiver role.
The role that schools play today is enormous. As teenagers battle to learn at home,
Parents' appreciation of instructors' abilities and crucial contribution to students' wellbeing
has grown. In the midst of a fight to care for the vulnerable children and youth in their midst,
Decision-makers must develop innovative methods for providing crucial services from
food, instruction, and healthcare.
