Folklore: The Legend of Roro Jonggrang (Indonesian)
1.1 The legend of Roro Jonggrang is a popular folktale in Indonesia. It
tells the story of a Javanese prince named Bandung Bondowoso who
fell in love with a beautiful princess named Roro Jonggrang. However,
Roro Jonggrang did not reciprocate his love and rejected him. As an act
of vengeance, Bandung Bondowoso decided to use his supernatural
power to turn Roro Jonggrang into a statue.
The legend goes on to narrate how Bandung Bondowoso managed to
turn Roro Jonggrang into a statue with the help of his army. But, before
he could complete the spell, the local villagers started pounding rice
with pestles, which produced the sound of dawn and made Bandung
Bondowoso's army believe that morning had begun. As they turned to
stone, Roro Jonggrang emerged from the ground as the thousandth
statue.
