Question 4.1
Projects go through many uncertainties. Therefore, projects must be able to adjust.
Traditional organisations are ineffective in the face of rapid change. In contrast, project
organisations should be organic. Explain what is meant by 'organic' and distinguish how
the different kinds of integrators can enhance interaction, coordination and mutual
adjustments. (20)
When we refer to a project organization being "organic," it means that it possesses certain
characteristics that enable it to adapt and respond effectively to uncertainties and rapid
changes in its environment. Unlike traditional organizations that typically have hierarchical
structures and rigid processes, organic project organizations prioritize flexibility,
collaboration, and horizontal relations.
Integration of sub-units using horizontal relations is a key aspect of an organic project
organization. Instead of relying solely on vertical communication channels and top-down
decision-making, an organic project organization encourages cross-functional collaboration
and communication across different sub-units. This facilitates the flow of information,
knowledge sharing, and problem-solving, enabling the organization to respond quickly to
changing circumstances.
Additionally, an organic project organization tailors its organizational structure to meet the
unique requirements of each project and its environment. It recognizes that different
projects may demand different approaches and structures to effectively manage and deliver
the desired outcomes. This flexibility allows the organization to allocate resources, assign
responsibilities, and make decisions in a manner that best suits the specific project, taking
into account factors such as project size, complexity, timeline, and stakeholder dynamics.
Overall, an organic project organization embraces adaptability, collaboration, and
customized structures. By promoting horizontal relations and tailoring its organizational
approach to fit the project's needs and the surrounding environment, it enhances its ability
to adjust, innovate, and succeed in the face of uncertainties and rapid changes.
