a) Express each situation in functional words. For example, the income tax is a
function of the total income.
 The labour is a function of house worked. For example if thy worked 2 hours
they are going to get R100.
 Siphokazi’s commission (15%) is a function of her weekly earnings (R230.00)
 The amount by which your savings will grow is a function of the interest
offered by the bank.
 The area of a circle is a function of the radius of a circle.
 The money paid for the rental of van (R230 + 4.30) is a function of the
kilometres travelled.
b) For each situation, indicate the dependent and independent variables.
 For the first situation the dependent variable (y) is the labour and the
independent variable (x) is the money paid per hour or the earnings per hour.
 For the second situation the dependent variable (y) is Siphokazi’s commission
(15%) and the independent variable (x) is her weekly earnings.
 For the third situation the dependent variable (y) is the amount by which
your savings grow and the independent variable (x) is the interest offered by
the bank.
 For the fourth situation the dependent variable (y) is the area of a circle and
the independent variable (x) is the radius of a circle.
 For the final, situation the dependent variable (y) is the money paid for the
rental of a van (R230 + 4.30 per kilometre) and the independent variable (x) is
