Introduction:
Children's literature is a significant source of learning and shaping of children's beliefs,
attitudes, and behaviors. The presence of gender stereotypes in children's literature
can significantly impact the way children perceive gender roles and their attitudes
towards women, men, and non-binary individuals. Therefore, it is essential to analyze
the representation of gender stereotyping in children's literature.
Gender Stereotyping in Children's Literature:
Gender stereotyping refers to the process of associating certain characteristics to
individuals based on their gender. These stereotypes can be harmful and limit
individuals' potential by creating barriers for their personal and professional growth
(Bennett, 2020). Children's literature is a significant source of gender stereotypes and
reinforces them through the portrayal of male and female characters.Several studies
have highlighted the prevalence of gender stereotypes in children's literature. A study
conducted by Weitzman, Eifler, Hokada, and Ross (1972) analyzed 5,619 children's
books published from 1900 to 1960 and found a significant gender bias in the
representation of male and female characters. The study revealed that male
characters were portrayed as more intelligent, adventurous, and dominant, while
female characters were depicted as passive, dependent, and emotional. Similarly, a
study conducted by Hamilton and Hunter (2018) analyzed the representation of gender
in 50 children's picture books published in 2017. The study found that male characters
were more likely to be the main character and portrayed as brave, confident, and
active. In contrast, female characters were depicted as nurturing, timid, and
emotional.The negative impact of gender stereotyping on children's beliefs and
attitudes towards gender roles is significant. Research has shown that children
exposed to gender stereotypes in literature are more likely to believe in traditional
gender roles and engage in gendered behavior (Ramsey, 2019). Moreover, exposure
to gender stereotypes in children's literature can lead to negative attitudes towards
women, men, and non-binary individuals and limit children's understanding of diversity
and inclusion (MacLeod & McDermott, 2016). esearch has shown that gender
stereotyping is prevalent in children's books. In a study conducted by Weitzman et al.
(1972), it was found that male characters were more often portrayed in active and
adventurous roles, while female characters were represented as passive and
domestic. This stereotyping was also reflected in the illustrations, with boys shown
engaging in outdoor activities and girls involved in indoor activities.
Similarly, a more recent study by Evans et al. (2000) showed that children's books
continue to reinforce gender stereotypes. The study found that male characters in
