Barriers of learning causative factors and manifestation are of importancy. As ateacher I need to know all about it and know the learner who is experiencing
barriers to learning.
According to study guide for ETH 306W Special Education Needs on page 142
the following list are barriers to learning:
1. Visual barriers to learning
2. Auditory barriers to learning
3. Intellectual barriers to learning
4. Physical barriers to learning
5. Epilepsy as a barrier to learning
6. Perceptual-motor barriers to learning
7. Language as a barrier to learning
8. Learning problems as a barrier to learning: foundation phase and
intermediate phase
9. Emotional and behavioural problems as barriers to learning
10. Barriers to learning related to spoken language
11. Barriers to learning related to written language
12. Barriers to learning related to reading
13. Barriers to learning related to mathematics.
This was one of my subjects last semester and I learned so much from it. The
following barriers to me are those I deal with at our school and I see in the
reading others also:
a. Visual barriers to learning
Eye conditions are a very big concern. Children aren’t taken for eye tests on a
time to time basis. The costs of living are too high and glasses are the lowest
on the budget. Those children need to sit in front of class to see clearly.
Albinism is also a condition I pick up under teenagers and we need to be
aware of it for sunlight must be kept away from them.
b. Intellectual barriers to learning
An intellectually disabled child is a child whose mental capacity is below what
is regarded as normal. This lesser intelligence means that this chid does not
learnt easily as others. It is extremely important for teachers to identify and to
understand these learners’ problems and to know how these learners could
be helped.
Intellectual mildly disabled learners function on a slightly below normal level
because of the fact that they are less gifted. Both parents have a lower level
of intelligences. Environmental circumstances in which learners grow up do
not stimulate their intellectual development in the same way as other
circumstances do. Some of them are malnutrition, poor medical services, a
lack of stimulating learning conditions, a lack of unmotivated parents.
c. Epilepsy as a barrier to learning
The incidence of epilepsy is becoming more common than few years ago.
Hidden epilepsy in learners showing no outward symptoms are one of my
biggest concerns. We could easily mistaken this as behaviour problems.
Learners suddenly spell a bad temper, aggressiveness, vandalism, changing
moods and are at times very depressed. For me to know the difference is
quite a challenge paying attention to suspicious signs for the right cause.
