INTRODUCTION You are familiar with book reviews. Consider the following questions:
1. What is the purpose of a book review?
2. When writing a review, should you give your own opinion about the book?
3. Why do we need book reviews?
CONCEPTS AND SKILLS Definition: A book review is a descriptive and critical account of a book.

What must be covered in a book review?
It provides a summary of the content and assesses the value of it to potential readers. A book review is written from an
individual’s point of view. It incorporates persuasion and analysis to show why someone should or should not read the
book, using specific examples to illustrate the points.

The following should feature in a book review:
 Give relevant facts, for example, the name of the author/producer/artist, the title of the book/work,
the name of the publisher/production company, as well as the price (where applicable).
 A very brief discussion of the genre, the setting, characterization, style of writing, the atmosphere, the
plot (only the outline of the story), conclusion & suitability and your judgement & rating.

Where would you come across a book review?
Publishers, bookshops, magazines or newspapers offer reviews to their readers. A review is always given on the blurb of
a book (inside the cover of a book - or on the back cover) or on a separate flier or pamphlet.
