Due Date: 1 August 2023

COMPULSORY READING
Prescribed book:
Seroto, J, Davids, MN & Wolhuter, C (eds). 2020. Decolonising education in the Global
South: historical and comparative international perspectives. Cape Town: Pearson.

SECTION A: COMPULSORY SECTION
Question 1 [40 marks]
Question 1(a) (20 marks) – Compulsory
Read the given extract titled, “Colonialism, coloniality and post-colonial Africa: a
conceptual framework”, from chapter 7 of the prescribed book (Seroto, Davids & Wolhuter
2020) and then answer the questions that follow

Question 1(a):
1. Define "colonialism" in your own words.
- Colonialism can be defined as a political and economic system in which a
foreign power dominates and controls another territory or group of people,
exploiting their resources and imposing their own culture, values, and
institutions on the colonized population.

2. How does Maldonado-Torres explain the concept of coloniality?
- Maldonado-Torres explains coloniality as the institutionalized form of
colonialism, encompassing the enduring patterns of culture, social relations,
and knowledge production. It refers to the long-lasting effects of colonial
practices that continue to shape societies even after the formal end of colonial
rule (Maldonado-Torres, 2007).

3. Explain the difference between colonialism and coloniality.
- The difference between colonialism and coloniality lies in their scope and
duration. Colonialism refers to the historical period when foreign powers
exerted political and economic control over other territories. On the other
hand, coloniality refers to the persistent and systemic effects of colonialism,
which are embedded in the social, cultural, and knowledge systems of post-
colonial societies (Maldonado-Torres, 2007).
