QUESTION 1 [10 marks]

Read the incorrect statements provided below. In each instance, argue
why the statement is incorrect. Each correct answer is worth two marks.

1.4. The youth have a responsibility to tell others what beliefs and
opinions they should hold.

This statement is incorrect because freedom of religion, belief and opinion
requires others to respect the beliefs and opinions of others, and their right to
express these, even when we may strongly disagree with these beliefs and
opinions

1.5. Fourteen-year-old learners may work as cashiers in shops after
school hours.

According to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, it is a criminal offence to
employ a child younger than 15, except in the performing arts with a permit from
the Department of Labour

1.6. Non-maleficence involves acting in manner that is beneficial to the
person involved.

Beneficence involves acting in manner that is beneficial to the person involved.

1.7. Teacher counselling involves the use of the same counselling
approach for all learners, regardless of their backgrounds, so that the
process is fair and equal.

Considering a learner’s background also means that counsellors should
attempt to adapt their interviewing skills and choice of counselling approach to
suit the learner’s personality and culture.

1.8. A solution-focused approach to counselling involves a search for
events that will show the belief that “something is wrong” with a person
to be false.

A solution-focused approach to counselling allows clients (learners) to see that
they are resourceful, capable and skilled. It enables learners to rely on
themselves and use their strengths to bring about change. It gives them ideas
for solution descriptions that change the pattern of the problem. The solution
focus “empowers people to take action and change, rather than blame the
system or others and wait for change to happen”(Von Cziffra-Bergs 2018:7).
