Commas:
We use to separate words in a list.
Eg. Fruits, dogs, sweets and toys.
Indicates where one phrase ends and another begins.
Eg She won the trophy, to the delight of the teachers.
Additional information uses two commas. This means what is in
commas can be removed from the sentence and make sense.
Eg Shazia Surtee ,a girl, stole the toy.
Commas come before and after however and nevertheless.
Introductory words are separated from the sentence with a
comma.
Eg Once again, Shazia hit Daiyaan.
Semi-colons:
Long pause that balances two important ideas.
Eg. She walked with the dog; she would rather have walked a
cat,
Indicates opposite ideas.
Eg. She skates in summer ;in winter she swims.
It joins two main clauses.
Eg. She worked hard for exams ; she had nothing to fear.
Instead of semi-colons we can use full stops or conjunctions.
Full stop:
Used at the end of a sentence.
Used after certain abbreviations.
